TAMPA — Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man working as a home security salesman who they say raped a woman in her Town 'N Country home Friday evening while going door to door.

Rashad Hales, 19, of 4019 E Grove St. in Tampa, is charged with attempted first degree murder, kidnapping, sexual battery, armed burglary with battery and tampering with a witness. He is being held in the Hillsborough County jail without bond.

At about 5:50 p.m., Hales knocked on the woman's door to solicit business for ADT security, deputies said. The woman opened the door and told Hales her fiance, who makes household decisions, was not home. About 5 to 10 minutes later, Hales knocked on the door again and told the woman he had spoken to her fiance about signing up. The woman tried to close the door, however Hales grabbed her wrist and stopped her, deputies said.

Hales pushed his way inside and locked the door. He began beating and strangling the woman using his hands and an electrical cord, deputies said, while telling the woman he should kill her.

Hales forced the woman to a bedroom where he raped her, deputies said. He then brought her to the kitchen, armed himself with a knife, held it to the woman's throat and threatened to kill her if she told anyone, deputies said. He took her cell phone and ran away.

A short time later, the woman's fiance returned home and called 911. Patrol deputies, K-9 deputies and helicopters set up a perimeter and tracked Hales. After a brief chase on foot, deputies captured Hales in the parking lot of the Shell gas station at 11203 Sheldon Road in Tampa.

During an interview with detectives, Hales admitted to the offenses and expressed regret that he did not kill the woman, deputies said. Hales said he thought the woman wouldn't tell anyone if he did not kill her, deputies said.

Hales was legitimately working for Secure Watch, an authorized dealer for ADT, going door to door throughout the neighborhood, deputies said.

The woman has been medically cleared. Deputies did not release her name because of the nature of the crime.

Hales' first appearance in court is scheduled for Sunday morning.

Deputies are looking for anyone who may recognize Hales, have additional information about him or may be a potential victim to contact the Sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200.

Fugilebrity Dec 31, 2011 1:06 PM About 37 minutes ago Memo to citizens: Never open your door for any solicitor. Ignore the doorbell, it is not Publishers' Clearing House. It is someone looking to take advantage of you, financially, criminally, or sexually. Reply Report Abuse 0 4 james4d Dec 31, 2011 12:03 PM About 1 hour ago I wonder if this company does back ground checks on it's employees. If may or may not have helped in preventing this crime, but it certainly could not have hurt. However, those that are employed to solicit door to door are usually ired and put to work the same day. My wife will not answer the door, unless I'm home or the dog is at her side. The kids are not allowed to open it to strangers what so ever. I feel bad for this woman and hope this ●●●●●● bag gets put away for a very long time.

That being said, based on his booking photo, I'm not sure I would have opened my door to him - and I'm a very fit 6'1", 205 male.

My hard and fast rule is to not buy ANYTHING from door-to-door sales people, or to even engage them in conversation beyond "No, I'm not interested. Have a nice day."

I'll cut kids who knock on my door some slack, but adults doing any kind of solicitation are sent on their way quick, fast and in a hurry.

I really feel sorry for the woman. I'm sure her husband and brothers (if she has any) would love to have ten minutes alone in a locked room with this piece of garbage.

LADIES!! DON'T OPEN YOUR DOOR FOR STRANGERS (PARTICULARLY MALES)!!!

I will be more than happy to put the bullet in his head. Better yet, maybe I'll aim a little farther south if you know what I mean. This thing should not be allowed to breathe the oxygen that you and I breathe!

Next time he will kill his victim because he's learned they will turn him in. His comment to the police was chilling. Bet she and her fiance are moved before the weekend is over.

ax2grind Dec 31, 2011 1:30 PM About 13 minutes ago I think you're wrong about his being old and grey before he gets out. History has shown the judicial and penal system are not harsh enough on someone who seems to be a first time offender. He'll be out before you know it and preying on some other woman who will lucky if she makes it past the rape to testify against him. Reply Report Abuse 0 1 LePetomane Dec 31, 2011 1:03 PM About 40 minutes ago I was under the impression that ADT plunked down the 50 or so dollars and did background checks. Anyway, noth'n beats a high capacity .45 semi-auto as a security system.
Reply Report Abuse 1 1 Jada Dec 31, 2011 1:14 PM About 29 minutes ago I have a large NO SOLICITING/CANVASSING sign on my door. They don't knock anymore. I absolutely HATE any company that solicites business this way. We live in a non soliciting neighborhood but they still come knocking, but not on my door now. We have ADT and there is a sign right by the door, but yet ADT hung a tag on my door that said call for an upgrade. Idiots. I am about ready to change alarm companies.

Reply Report Abuse 0 1 What Now Dec 31, 2011 1:36 PM About 7 minutes ago My heart goes out to this poor woman. So sad because events like this serve to make our society an increasingly defensive and less trusting one. Florida is already a transient and mobile place, people come and go. It is hard to get to know your neighbors. Also, many worthy charities and causes are hurt by this. We are all victims behind our locked doors.
Reply Report Abuse 0 0 tozzie Dec 31, 2011 1:44 PM About -1 minutes ago 'Tampering with a witness'? Hales threats should have boasted each and every charge to "aggravated". You giving him a what, five year break, on every charge because he "confessed"? Give me a break. I've heard of deals, but this is ridiculous. With half a days work, you could have nailed this down without such a deal. Pitiful.

larryburnettwhitetrashtenants Dec 31, 2011 1:47 PM About -1 minutes ago Hey, this is the same method that Hummer Limo and their assorted criminals used in order to determine who my home insurer was. I hope people are not giving these folks any information besides the fact that WHY ARE YOU OPENING YOUR DOOR??????????????????????????? Why would she open it AGAIN??? She had just told him she was home alone. Ridiculous. Glad she is OK, however. Sad to learn this the hard way. Be well, m'aam. Town N Country is a nasty enough dump thanks to Sokol counterpart, Tony Delgado crewe among others (tony is just a yes man)ADT should be sued. Hope they ARE !!! I find many of their employees sinister and laugh pretty good over how people trust these thugs to watch their property !!! LOL!! Why are people so stupid? Don't they have EYES?
